Love & Football
Lemme get this out there so there's no shock and awe. I love football, always have. Long before I dated Miles, I was a fan of the sport. You'd think with a father that was a stone's throw away from the pros, basketball would be my sport of choice. Nope, football's got my heart. I've hostessed Super Bowl parties as well as attended many, many games. Don't get me wrong, I love watching live basketball and you can catch me at a baseball game or two, but if I had my choice, football would be played all year round. And yes, I was a fan of the inane XFL league as well. Hell, it was football and I spent MANY a Saturday night watching. But I'm missing the point.
Loving football gives me an edge on the average female. I'm not that chick that wants to talk during the 4th quarter of a game with 2 minutes on the clock, I know how to play my part. I'm not even that chick that tries to watch the game and asks 17 million questions about what's going on. As a matter of fact, it's a rarity for me to watch a game with my boyfriend cuz I'm not quiet (hell, I'm not quiet in anything I do) and can ruin his experience. I'm the chick that brings snacks to the guys on game day and replenishes the alcohol during commercial breaks before heading to another room to watch the game(s). That being said, my life's easy when it comes to the whole sports issue. So's not the case for many females out there.
I stumbled across this article about how guys can watch the playoffs in peace. Now, though I'm grateful that MSN's tried to give men a little playbook on how to actually enjoy watching sports, I just find it hard to grasp some of the tactics they're telling men to use. I mean, is it really THAT hard? Are men and women TRULY that different? I mean, why not just let the guys have their "thing" and women do the same. Don't invade his game time (football, poker, PS2, XBox360, etc.) and he'll let you watch your soap operas or whatever it is you chicks like to partake in.
My point here is that sports and relationships CAN co-exist without one party or the other having to do something they really hate in order to enjoy something they really love. Maybe it's unrealistic of me to look at things that way, but I'm a different kinda thinker. Maybe it's the constant battle between the male and female side of me, nature vs. nurture. Whatever it is, it's given me some understanding and insight into the male psyche, enough for me to know that things can always work out. Like love & football.
