The Disappearance of Exclusivity

Let me go on record saying that I am not a jealous person by any means. One of the best pieces of advice my dad gave me was that if a man is going to cheat, 99% of the time it's got nothing to do with you. Words to live by that have shaped my outlook on relationships. But I'd also like to go on record and say that I am human. And I am prone to jealousy, bottom line. I'm not the chick from "You So Crazy" jealous, and half the time a guy won't even know that my jealousy has reared it's ugly head cuz I try to get over it ASAP. Jealousy is a personal emotion and is cause for unnecessary drama in relationships.

Why the rant, you ask? Strange thing, I felt a stab of jealousy tonight and I don't know why. Over a guy I don't know, and that bothers me. But the jealousy made me think about dating and my age group. Pretty much, dating from 18-30 is shot to shit. As bleak as that may sound, it's true. Our generation has been raised to look for the next best thing. If your parents were nurses, you be a doctor. If you own an Acura TL, work harder to step it up to an MDX. If you've got a 3-bedroom home, build a 6-bedroom mansion. There's nothing wrong with wanting nice things or to kick it up a notch, we've just never been taught to be satisfied with where we are and what we've got. Which puts us all in constant hustler mode.

So's the same with dating. Yeah, you've got a boyfriend, but you hesitate on saying that in case something better comes along. Even in a satisfying relationship, we've always got an "out," a star that we are "allowed to cheat" on our significant others with. I know people say that humans are not fundamentally monogamous, but cuh-mon!

This was a random rant, and I've honestly lost the point of this entire blog, A.D.D. can be a bitch sometimes. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure there was a point to this blog, I think I really just wanted some insight on the disappearance of exclusivity.
